One can never accuse the Chemical Brothers of consistency. We Are the Night continues their eclectic electronica approach even though the big-beat groove of the title track remains their digital calling card. Spotted with a minimalist keyboard pattern, vocal non sequiturs, and sampled sound effects, the infectious groove of "We Are the Night" eventually evolves into the monotone-chanted dance chorus of "We are the night skies/We are the bright lies," recalling Brian Eno circa Here Come the Warm Jets. However, for every catchy electro-dance, there's a tune that leaves you scratching your head. What to make of the novelty song "The Salmon Dance" is anybody's guess, though you might find some illumination in a salmon recipe on their Web site. With fractured nursery-rhyme lyrics that are sung like an off-color Sesame Street rap, it will drive you up the wall--or at least toward the skip button. Then there's Midlake singing the trancey ballad "The Pills Won't Help You Now," making the Chemical Brothers sound like a sci-fi version of Coldplay. Retro-analog synthesizers dominate, with the electro-grooves of "Das Spiegel," "Burst Generator," and "Saturate," which builds on a Kraftwerk-forged metal framework coupled with storming sampled drums. The circuits of '70s techno-pop artist the Normal are re-soldered on "Do It Again." With Ali Love singing the title-track chorus, it's built to be a summertime anthem akin to Tag Team's "Whoomp! (There It Is)," albeit robotically chilled. --John Diliberto

Album Description
Over a decade has passed since The Chemical Brothers debut that ushered the crossover of electronic music into the rock mainstream. They continue with their musical progression that entices their original fanbase while generating new ones. With over 8 million albums sold, hits like Rock Blockin' Beats, and the ever present music of Galvanize as the music in the Bud Select commercials, The Chemical Brothers have become a ubiquitous presence. With sixth studio album under their belt, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons demonstrate that when it comes to supreme beat-based innovation, inspired collaborations and sheer sonic excellence, the two are unsurpassable. We Are The Night displays a myriad of sounds, rhythms and emotions along with an astounding roster of featured artists. This griping body of work slipsbetween something simply fun like, The Salmon Dance featuring Fatlip of Pharcyde to haunting tracks like Battle Scars sung by Willy Mason. The album would not be complete without a few signature dance anthems including We Are The Night, Burst Generator and Do It Again which will be the first single for the album. Other additional featured artists that appear on the album include the very hot Klaxons, Midlake and Ali Love.

3 out of 5 stars Losing their heart   July 3, 2008
Alex (St. Louis, MO, USA)
Although the production is impressive and on point, this album lacks character and direction. It almost feels more like a random compilation of tracks that never really goes anywhere or says anything. They evidently tried to emulate some current club and dance music styles, but it somehow feels forced. Do It Again could be a decent late 2000s house/techno anthem if it weren't for the cheap, horribly annoying "paint my face and bang my drum" bridge section, which sounds lazy and throws the whole song out of character. This sort of thing happens with most of the songs. Three stars for the edgy, talented audio production, but that's about it. Sorry guys.

4 out of 5 stars SALMON DANCE = SUPER CHILL   May 16, 2008

Everyone, even the amazon editorial busted on the salmon dance. Which is my favorite song on the track. I can listen to that one song over and over. Then again these people probably don't like weird music like clap your hands say yeah or architecture in helsinki.

2 out of 5 stars Can the album save itself from "The Salmon Dance"?   April 27, 2008

Well after the single release of "Do It Again", We Are The Night made it's appearance in the U.S. The wait wasn't necessarily worth it.

While "Do It Again" did peak some interest as to what was in store for the LP, one listen to the LP made you wondering what happened. The album doesn't take the staple C.B. format - start strong and fade. I'm not even sure what the "strong" part of the album is.

"Saturate" turns out to be a real standout good song, and the LP version of "Do It Again" is well done. Other tracks that end up being worth repetitive listening are "Das Spiegel", "Burst Generator", and "Modern Midnight Conversation". Thank goodness for the skip function.

As others have mentioned, "The Salmon Dance" might well be the worst song ever released. Not just by the Chemical Brother, but ever! I have no idea what anyone was thinking putting that together. It's terrible and is the 'nail in the coffin' for an overall mediocre album.

Maybe things will improve next time around. An apology for "The Salmon Dance" is a good start.

1 out of 5 stars sigh...   March 13, 2008

what happened? im just perplexed. i like different styles of music & i am all for supporting bands that i like to switch it up a bit & expand themselves. but i still expect the same passion & creativity to come through, even if they banged on some pots or played spoons.

i dont want to say anything bad about them, because all these years (its been over a decade) & as the dust brothers, they have continued to please me very very much. ive seen them live 4 times. im just hoping this was a once off & we can get passed it. i've heard rumours that sony kind of pushed them this way but who knows????

1 out of 5 stars Insulting   March 12, 2008

Up until now CB have been one of my top groups. They've got some great stuff out there. This album is worse than I can really verbalize, so I won't try so hard (just like they didn't try with it). Go to youtube and check out the salmon dance. If you can watch that and tell me it sounds good to you, by all means get this, but I haven't found the hamster dance funny since the 90's and it is about as good. I am 100% positive that much of the support of this is just because it's by CB. If it was their first album, they'd never have gained any traction at all with it and for no other reason than that it is horrendously unenjoyable and amateurish.
