Amazon.com Arguably the most famous DJ in the world, circa 1999, and certainly one of the most influential across all fields of music, London mixmaster Paul Oakenfold enjoys his first Global Underground release in America with a two-disc set that goes to the farthest corners of modern dance-club music. Oakenfold (who has remixed and spun for U2 and coproduced the Happy Mondays) obviously has a phenomenal record collection. Using the hues and vibes of Manhattan, Oakenfold weaves together a landmark house set for those who have never heard one. The first disc is smattered with trancey house grooves, with swirls of funk thrown in for good measure, thanks to Solar Stone's "Flood" and an effortless high-energy mix that allows brief recuperative moments before once again taking off a la the segue from Lustral's "Everytime" into Miro's "Paradise." The second disc sees Oakenfold playing around with some spacier jungle flavors, such as Ambrosia's "In Your Arms," before enjoying a breakbeat-fueled journey through Talisman & Hudson's "Leave Planet Earth," then effortlessly easing on into trance-house warmth again with Albion's "Air." New York shows that Oakenfold is certainly one of the smoothest operators behind the decks today. Unfazed by the confusing subgenres of electronica, Oakenfold fondly embraces them all, fashioning sets of rich diversity. As with Global Underground's other releases, this disc is a great starting point for those who wish to dip their feet into club land's musical culture. --Steffan Chirazi

A solid mix by Paul Oakenfold July 31, 2007 Catherine Gallanti (San Diego, CA USA) Great Paul Oakenfold CD...As a fan of his earlier work, even pre-Transport, since I heard Paul's music from when it first started in the London scene in the early 90s (showing my age here), I have often felt dissapointed by his late releases. Although wonderfully produced, much of his later work does not show the truly outstanding eclectic musical taste that he displayed in early works pre-world fame such as his Essential Mix (later called the Goa mix) and Perfecto Fluoro. The quality of this Cd however is hard to debate. Very good, well crafted, excellently produced, professionally put together mix. One cannot argue with this Cd: if you like trance/house and all the subcategories of this ever evolving genre, this is good. Thats all there is to it. A very good Cd by one of the greatest DJ.
Excellent, but I've heard better July 2, 2007 A. Neogy (Los Angeles, CA USA) Definitely one of my favorite global undergrounds, the track "rescue me" takes me back years ago when I used to travel with my family. That one track, is worth getting the entire album in my opinion. But don't get me wrong, both discs are phenomenal. However, my ears are spoiled-and I've heard better.
as far as Oakenfold's music goes, this is his BEST work...
This Global Underground has been a favorite of mine for many years, so much that I bought another copy(when I lost my original).
Typical Oakenfold With a Couple of Twists March 1, 2007 CloudMan (Sydney, NSW Australia) This is Oakenfold's second release for Global Underground (the first being Global Underground 004:Oslo), and has been released with three different album covers.
Global Underground: New York follows the tone set by his prior Global Underground album released two years prior. Another eclectic album ecompassing multiple genres of electronica. Unlike GU:Oslo, this compilation is a little lighter on the drum and bass tracks.
Disc 1 is predominantly ambient/downtempo mixes with trance. I found none of the tracks to be that gripping. Fairly ordinary set.
Other than the opener (nice try Paul, but somehow the gangster D&B doesn't gel with your image very well), disc 2 is fairly typically of what Oakenfold likes to play. Trance, trance, and more trance. Most of the tracks just don't sound that great when played today.
Disc 1 and disc 2, get 3/5 stars.

If you dig the way trance just gets into your blood, then this set is a great purchase. I have been listening to this disc set constantly for over a year, yet I never tire of it. Oakenfold artfully layers solid grooves and great effects in tracks that pull you into the music and make you want to dance. The transitions are great, building different moods and inspiring you to play the whole CD. Paul Oakenfold is, by far, my favorite DJ. I appreciate all genre of music, but this one consistently makes it to the top of my favorites pile. Great for clubbing; I also love to listen as I exercise. It is a truly welcome addition to any collection.
Not the best. February 17, 2001 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This mix is not especially great in any way. He uses a few of the same songs found on his other mixes (Summersault, 3 drives on vinyl, rollercoaster, nautical bodies) which takes some of the flavor away from this 2CD set.Away from his standard songs, there is nothing worth mentioning, though the mixing is excellent, which is expected of anything Oakenfold. I don't know what it is, but these CD's just don't convey anything to me. The songs don't go together right. This isn't really GU quality. CD2 starts out differently, and I think that's the albums best moment - track1, cd2 sucks, but "Leave Planet Earth," "Composure," and "Air" really go together well to do something new.... he should have built on that and made CD2 something worth listening to all the way through. I hate that Burning Flame song..... I hate any mix that uses it.... Also, the last track on CD2 is completely out of place. It also features Oakey's worst mixing ever. Pathetic. I can't believe Oakey would throw it in there (I mean that literally...that's how it sounds). Overall, it's not worth buying unless you're collecting all the GU albums, or all of Oakenfold's stuff.
