5 out of 5 stars Superb.   November 14, 2001

Ignore the review below by Christopher Culver, he obviously hasn't got a clue what he's talking about, I agree that Sasha and Digweed are superior mixers as far as technical skill is concerned but what he doesn't understand is that Oakenfold has never been a mixer, what has made him one of the all time greats DJs has been his taste, resulting in superb track selection.
Also Culver's arguement is crippled because this Oakenfold mix was mixed 'live' whereas the Digweed and Sasha sets he refers to were done on a computer using pro-tools, most of Sasha's and Digweed's sets are done this way.

This may not be Mr Perfecto's best cd but still is a nice to listen one.. First disc may be surprising but he shows us how to fade from d&b to his typical sound. This album is about 90s dance music & Paul Oakenfold. A must for Oakie's big fans *chris culver: mixing does not mean playing both tracks 2 or more minutes. Since it sounds cool, doesnt matter how many stages it took..

4 out of 5 stars Oakenfold does it again but only on one cd   August 8, 2001

Paul okenfold's live in Oslo is a great but for any global underground fan or like great trance with killer beats. It is highly recommended. But dont expect two great CD's number two rocks. CD 1 lacks something but no CD ever has two good CD's besides his first and best when he did GU in New York. Look it up its the best he has ever done.

1 out of 5 stars Why do people go for this sort of stuff?   February 8, 2001

Alright, I admit it, I just don't understand the attraction the general public has to Paul Oakenfold. Everything I've heard by him shows no particular skill in mixing, and perhaps the biggest reason for his publicity is that he plays the trippy type of tunes that appeal to teenagers, many of whom go to raves more for the social or chemical scene than for the music.

His LIVE IN OSLO release in the Global Underground series is a perfect example of this. His set works more like a mix tape, tracks thrown in randomly, than like a true DJ's set, which should consist of a warmup and than a series of shifts designed to give the listener a voyage-type feel. And the mixing is awful. As one reviewer ... pointed out, the songs are only mixed through a couple of bars. That's a problem. On Dave Seaman's CAPE TOWN Global Underground retrospective, a few notes of "The Baguio Track" are mixed into Planisphere's "So Many Ways" for several minutes, so that the coming track is like a coming stormfront. Oakenfold's LIVE IN OSLO, however, has more the feel of a DJ saying, "Ok, this track bores me, let me just throw the cross-fader all the way over now."

If you want to hear a real DJ doing a real set, which involves organizing a tracklisting carefully and mixing impeccably, try Sasha's IBIZA retrospective or John Digweed's HONG KONG. Leave Oakenfold to the kids.

Oakenfold's Oslo mixCD is by far one of the most intriguing CDs in my collection. While the mixing style is often rather minimal (with tracks coming together only a few bars at a time for most of the CD), it is still a standout mix. Why? Well, for one MAIN reason: disc one.

Disc one is almost two mixes in one. The first half of the CD (tracks 1-7) are basically chilled out, atmospheric jungle. Omni Trio, Olive, LTJ Bukem... The usuals in this department. Oh, but it is such an emotional first half. This atmospheric set works its way up into the second half though, kicking off with a classic Bedrock Tune ("Set In Stone") and grooving through 4 more trance numbers that really show Oakenfold's goa roots. This sets us up for the second disc.

Disc two is all pretty much like the second half of the first disc. More psychedelic-styled trance -- *not* goa, but again Oakenfold's goa roots are showing here. This disc opens up with another (now) classic Bedrock tune ("Forbidden Zone") and just works that energy for another 70 minutes. This disc is well populated with excellent tracks from the time (1997) though; there's some Taucher, Eve, Astral Projection, and Shades of Blue's "So Much" (which I feel is perhaps the disc's highlight track).

But, while innovative and a joy to listen to, this CD does show its age now, 3 years after its release. Do I still recommend it? Well, if you're looking for good quality mixes: yes. If you're just looking for what's hot at the moment: no. Or maybe I'd tell you "yes" anyway.
