Watered Down Grape! December 2, 2007 Dennis H. Pope (secaucus, NJ United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This version is irrelevant given the recent quality reissues by Sundazed. The "gimmick" here is that you get a twofer-"Wow" and "Grape Jam" on one disc. What you are really getting are improvidently edited versions of both recordings (neither is complete) which suffer from lackluster sound do to inadequate transfers. I note that the asking price is high for this disc--much higher in some instances than what you'd pay for the superior quality Sundazed issues.
Bottom line: Avoid this at all costs!!!!
The Stars are only for the Original Release July 27, 2007 Tom (Clifton, NJ) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I must agree with most everyone out there. This is one big rip-off! Somehow, some way, we must be offered a remastered issue of the original recording. I bought this version and was completely disappointed. Not only did the scumbuckets cut out music but they muffled dear 'ol Arthur Godfrey too. This milestone in 60's music deserves better handling. Who hires the jerks that come up with these pitiful ideas? If you can find an original LP in good condition or an 8-track cassette, (yes I have an original believe it or not), make your own CD. The music is fantastic.
not as good overall as the first, but better in spots December 1, 2006 Music Fanatic 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Personally I don't think that Wow is as good as the self titled album as a whole, but if you take it in pieces, it's actually better. Everyone needs to own this album if only to hear Motorcycle Irene, which is one of the greatest songs ever written and performed.
Here's What You Do September 4, 2006 bobtec (Redlands, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Wow / Grape Jam is incomplete. So is Columbia Legacy's Vintage. Answer....Buy both albums (Amazon's other buying options still has some copies of Vintage for around $15/disc - which in California is a third of a fill up for a camery).Take the best cuts of both, and put them on a blank disc (the only song you wont have is the (very spacy) the Lake, and the announcement to turn your platter speed from 33 1/3 to 78 for Just Like Gene Autry, a foxtrot that was on the original WOW album.
This album reminds me a lot of Buffalo Springfield Again. Pungiant little gems from a rapidly disintegrating band.
Enjoy.
Incidentally, you can do this, add The Place And The Time (original version - from Vintage), Miller's Blues (Live - from Vintage), and still have around 7 minutes to mess around with. Great for a car backup.
UNDERRATED May 10, 2006 Dean Mellis (New York, NY USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Not only is this album underrated, so was every Moby Grape album after the first one. This one is different from all of them, showing the diversity of talent and style in the band. How many bands had 5 strong songwriters? The jams are entertaining. The only knock is that it's missing the second half of Bitter Wind and all of Just Like Gene Autrey a Fox Trot, which can be found on the Vintage 2 CD set. It's also missing The Lake from Grape Jam, which was a spacey, spoken word psychedelic piece. I'd also recommend 20 Granite Creek and '69
