Sublty pleasing, but missing Dave's true punches... February 17, 2003 Robert C. Riggs (Atlanta, Georgia USA) Dave Seaman continues to release a uniquely mesmerizing album in this release; however, he seldom reaches the ethereal trance I have come to known and love him for. What this CD is, though, is a glimpse into a mellower, more subdued Dave Seaman. When I realize this, the album takes on a new meaning for me. On CD 1, he begins perfectly, from A guy called Gerald's "Humanity", truly the best hit to come from that shooting star. The CD starts to blow up mildly on song #5, Southside, but Dave keeps it very controlled and in check throughout. Janeiro is a true dream, sets me spinning to never come back down until the CD is through. But again, I never get the slam-in-your-face, lose control and run as fast as you can feeling I have off his prevous releases. "Deliver Me" starts to remind me of the soaring melodies this man is capable of, and it continues into "Stylus Trouble" with a tightly controlled loop that can make anyone start moving. Ruhe takes you back down slowly with indian chants and gets you ready for CD2. "Travelogue" kicks off CD2 and reminds me of the ethereal trance Dave is so capable of mastering. The song literally makes me dizzy. "Waiting" is another good song, full of melody. It isn't until "Inner Laugh" that I begin to become hypnotized by this CD. Dave truly takes it slow, and each track continues to build upon the intensity laid out from the previous ones. "Musifon/So Strong" is my kind of music. Now this is the kind of music that lifts me up into a new atmosphere. I can put this in and everything else drifts away. "Oracle/Passive Aggressive" I can personally do without, but I am kicked back in to the groove with "Love like Sleep". I clearly am driven most by trance synth, fast beats, and sultry vocals, and for this "Love like Sleep" does not disappoint. On "B y Whoop too Be Y" Dave really turns on the trance, I love this one. This track reminds me of a down-tempo Tiesto. "Pachinko" kicks also, and Dave caps off a terrific set with my absolute favorite song of all-time, Way out West's "Mindcircus." This mix is truly what blew me away on this album, and reinforced my enthusiasm for Nick Warren. Dave is still my favorite DJ of all-time, and his unique style is unmatched. He goes down with Satoshi Tommie in my DJ hall of fame. This album is a definite must-have, I just tend to play from songs 4-11 on CD 2 repeatedly.
To good for words September 2, 2001 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this CD with reservations, because I was very dissapointed with the first Renaissance CD. But this one is much, much better. I have only 2 complaints as far as this mix goes: Some times the programming is a little abrupt, so that you go from point A to point E but miss all the stops in between. But otherwise Dave crams a great 4 hour set into 2 CD's and does it nicely. The only other complaint I have is that the CD's are labeled kind of generically. The first disk should be called "Sex" and the second should be called "Dance", because these are the inspirations you will get from each. Otherwise the mixing is tight, the tunes are beautiful and surprising, and if you like progressive house you will LOVE this. No offense to Digweed, but Dave Seaman does not go for any of the trendy deep house that currently masquerades as trance. He keeps the beats pumpin' and your hands in the air, especially thru the 2nd disk. Very daring and original and extremely well done.
nothing less than the best! May 16, 2001 Yance M. Freeman (Virginia, USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
If I lost this CD to a natural disaster today, I would go out and buy another tomorrow. Track one disk one is absolutely haunting. I can't get it out of my head. A perfect start to a superb journey in electronic music. You've heard it before..."see Seaman live". Do it! You'll be a fan for life.
