It's beautiful to see, but it was broken out of the box January 6, 2009 Charles D. Mayfield (Owatonna, MN) My N10J was delivered to me yesterday via Fedex. I opened it up with much relish and cleared all of the packaging away. It is very nice looking. It looks like a quality product. After I unboxed and cleared away all of the packaging, I fired it up. I pulled out the quick start directions. Plugged it in and booted it up and......nothing.
So I tried and tried again. I then started looking for tech support. The 1888number for Asus premier support was busy or it just did nothing. I never could get through to the toll free support. So I went online, to Asus online, and was able to chat from my PC to a live person. The tech guy listened and asked me if I tried "F9". I said, I never even heard if there was an "F9". How would I know to hit "F9". So we did the "F9" thing and reformatted the entire harddrive from the hidden partition. After 25 minutes everything would be fine, he said. Not so. System kept looping and could not boot Vista.
According to the online chat tech guy from Asus, I have hardware failure. Arggghhhh. My relish turned to sauerkraut in short time.
Excellent computer, poor otherwise December 29, 2008 Consumer Advocate (usa) 2 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have had this for a week. I kept the computer since it has a lot of good features, including the discrete video card, large HDD, comfortable keyboard (except for the right shift key being too small for such an important key), and I would gladly change this review rating if ASUS ever decides to send me the "included optical drive" that is missing. I almost sent it back, because the special cable for the CD/DVD player and the CD/DVD player itself were missing. This computer came with a special option to upgrade to XP (yes, I said UPgrade), and it required using the enclosed disks, hence I assumed the CD/DVD drive was included. I called Amazon and they graciously offered to pay the return shipping and refund or send me another. I decided to call ASUS first, assuming they would simply send one out to me. ASUS claimed that the CD/DVD player and cable were not included in the sale of the product, and that I'd have to buy it separately. I searched the enclosed doc and found the following: In the "Windows vista downgrade to xp" it said "insert XP recovery disk into the optical drive"; since the optical drive is required to do this, this implies the drive was included. In the "User Manual" on page 41, it says: "This notebook PC HAS the following storage devices: Expansion card, OPTICAL DRIVE (external), flash memory reader, hard disk drive. It's clear the optical drive is SUPPOSED to be included. Page 43 details connecting the drive: "...this Notebook PC features a power output jack for use with the PROVIDED optical drive." How much more evidence do you need? Some other items are clearly marked as "optional" in other places. Page A-2 further lists "optional accessories" and the optical drive is not listed, showing that it is included in the package price. A recovery disk was not present, and the manual says it is "optional." If your hard drive happens to go bad, and you replace it, the enclosed disk will NOT restore your windows, and you will presumably have to buy another license!!
"Missing" External Optical Drive December 21, 2008 L. Brand (Northern VA) 1 out of 13 found this review helpful
I recently received the ASUS N10J and its External Optical Drive was missing; Amazon customer service directed me to ASUS. The Optical Drive (USB connected) is referenced within the User manual (and also in various industry reviews I have read).
In the User Manual Section titled: "Using the Notebook PC", Subsection: Optical Drive (External), it explains connecting the External Optical Drive: "... for use with the provided optical drive." Also, in Section A-2 of the User Manual it lists Optional Accessories yet the External Optical Drive is not listed.
I'm awaiting a final decision from ASUS but their initial claim is that the inclusion of the External Optical Drive is dependent upon the distributor as to whether or not the optical drive is included.
Obviously, this isn't very helpful now.
Awesome Netbook. Worth the extra money. December 20, 2008 Tech Guru 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Asus N10j is an awesome little machine.
I was looking to buy a super portable yet inexpensive machine for travel and none of the "netbooks" met my requirements. I wantesd dedicated graphics, 2gb ram, big hard drive, etc The NJ10j has all of these and more. It even comes with accidental damage protection!
Perfect Upgrade for eee PC 1000H December 7, 2008 Roy (CA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
If you are thinking about buying eee PC 1000H, but don't like the facts that 1000H gets only 1G RAM (vs. 2G), 160G HDD (vs. 320G) and Xp Home (vs. Xp Pro. or Vista,) AND you can afford to upgrade it into your ideal configuration, then you can save the time and effort by buying n10 instead.
It costs a little more with all fully upgraded 1000H's features plus a video card AND a finger print reader AND a more sturdy shell AND a more comfortable keyboard.
The only quirks with this machine are:
1) Champaign color only, a bit tacky, I wish Asus would have provided options like black, silver, blue... more serious colours.
2) Even though the accompanied 6 cell battery is a nice upgrade from the original lab version of 3 cell, but 4.5 hours of battery life is still too short. Hopefull, a 9 cell battery will be out soon for purchase.
3) It will be nice if the machine could have come with vista better tuned out of factory. Given the relatively weak CPU, n10 is not ready to use out of the box with the original factory setting. You basically have to wait 20 minutes before the newly installed vista to finish all the process of checking updates and finishing up some startup. (However, after some simple tweaks, the OS is not as bad as how people on the net described - I think it is acceptable.) Asus should really offer xp pro version right out of box so that those folks don't want to dirty their hands with non-user-friendly vista could start right off bet using the machine.
