Buy this machine! Totally awesome netbook! January 6, 2009 MrUbuntu Life without Windows is great! Everything is great on this netbook (except the built-in web cam that died). Everthing is good on this in terms of productivity. Microsoft must be scared as they are holding off retiring Windows XP and installing it on netbooks to try and crowd out Ubuntu, which is SUPERIOR!
Couple of MAJOR things missing... January 1, 2009 GEORGE E. NEWMAN (West Hartford, CT) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Look, I have NO PROBLEM with a machine that is NOT running Windows. Ubuntu is a great operating system. Anyone who purchases Microsoft Office BEFORE even *trying* OpenOffice.org is not being thrifty with his or her money, to say the least.
I can't give this small netbook five stars for other reasons.
1)There is NO CAPS LOCK light. (I use caSe Sensitive passwords so this is a BIG pain)
2)The keyboard is small (to be expected) BUT there is NO Shift key on the right side of the keyboard. Sylvania's other netbook has this.
Oh well.
Finally this particular Netbook seems to be slow. My guess is that since they loaded a fatter version of Ubuntu on it that's what you get.
Okay so these are first generation, but wow with other competitors on the block Sylvania blew it.
Perfect First Computer! December 20, 2008 R. Schlie (Ohio) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this computer for my 4 year old grandson, our little "computer whiz" for Christmas! We replaced the Ubuntu with Windows XP and downloaded all his popular games and educational software he plays so it will be ready to go on Christmas morning! He will never misplace his little laptop because of the terrific bright color and it is just the right size for his small fingers! It is a perfect first computer for him but actually has more memory than my Gateway home computer!
runs GOOD! December 9, 2008 slackwaredave 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've had mine for two weeks now and am impressed with the smoothness and speed of the operating system. I usually use KDE, but the Gnome on the Ubuntu looks good and works flawlessly. The unit is a tad larger than an oversized paperback book. The keyboard is as small as you can go for human fingers, but it and the touchpad have a high-quality feel to them. I get over 3 hours on the battery.
The Ubuntu netbook remix software repositories are HUGE. You'll find about everything you want there. For the few things you might want that are not in the "lpia" remix repositories, like the Opera web browser, you can force the i386 .deb packages to install and they run fine. Search something like "dpkg force architecture" to find out how.
If you're not into the tech and Linux tinkering, you'll still be OK. Everything is logical, and almost every net basic is pre-installed so you can just unbox it, boot, and go!
I got the Solar Yellow color. It gets a lot of "ooohs" and "ahhhs". Very smart looking. The entire unit looks and feels well made and solid. I'm so impressed!
Awesome December 7, 2008 Cutting the Red Tape (The Armpit of America) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is an awesome little netbook. It worked straight out of the box - no problems, although it did take a few minutes for it to connect to the internet the very first time. It needed lots of updates, but those downloaded and installed smoothly. The OS is awesome - very user friendly and easy to figure out - all without having ever used anything Linux. It starts up quickly and goes to sleep/wakes back up easily. The webcam worked first try (remember to take the little plastic piece off the lens!), as did the mail and instant messaging programs. It comes with several simple but fun games. The color scheme is very eye-catching (and the whole reason for buying this particular model) although I would have liked for the bottom to be yellow, too. (It's not it's black.) The keyboard is tiny, but not unusable (some of the keys are in unexpected places, like the apostrophe and quotes). It just takes a minute to get used to. That's to be expected with a netbook, anyway. It does get a little warm to the touch, but I don't think that's anything to worry about. Overall it's a sturdy and attractive way to keep connected on the go. Well worth the money!
