Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
Set against the decadent glamour and escalating danger of revolution-eve Cuba, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights re-imagines the 1987 film phenomenon from an exciting new perspective. Havana Nights tells a timeless story of a young woman's discovery of love, sensuality and independence - but with a sizzling style and rhythm all its own. In planning this new chapter in a beloved franchise, Artisan Entertainment and Miramax Films have put together a team of creative dynamos from the worlds of film, music and dance. Among them: maverick independent producer Lawrence Bender (Pulp Fiction, Good Will Hunting); executive producer Sarah Green (Frida); Academy Award. winning screenwriter Ron Bass (Rain Man, My Best Friend's Wedding); director Guy Ferland; screenwriter Pamela Gray (A Walk on the Moon); choreographer Joanne Jansen; music industry legend Clive Davis, whose hot J Records imprint will release the soundtrack; acclaimed actor Diego Luna, a rising star following his performance in the sexy sensation Y Tu Mama Tambiin; and, in what promises to be a breakout role, gifted young actress Romola Garai (recently seen in Nicholas Nickleby). The resulting film is certain to give audiences - from newcomers to those who cherish the first Dirty Dancing - the time of their lives, and then some!

5 out of 5 stars Great beats!   October 12, 2008

The title says it all. The music has a Hispanic flare and is very fun to listen to and dance to.

2 out of 5 stars Where's baby!?   July 22, 2008
J'mel Davidson (deep south)
When I bought this soundtrack I was really impressed, Mainly by track 12- Satellite (Spanish Version) Nave Espacial (From "Havana Nights") - Santana Featuring Jorge Moreno. I was also immediately taken by Dirty Dancing by the Black Eyed Peas. It seemed out of place, and was hardly dirty, but I figured that the filmmakers knew what they were doing. And while I thought that the omission of Baby and Patrick Swayze from the album cover was odd, I couldn't wait to see the film. Were these people on the cover the kids of baby and Swayze? Would they carry on the tradition of Dirty Dancing? Well, Buyer beware! The movie is only dirty in the way that it tricks its viewer into thinking they're getting the further adventures of Baby! There is no Baby! The film takes place in Cuba, and everyone is sweaty. The two people dancing are even the same age! This film completely misses the point of the original film, and all copies of it should be burned, along with a bunch of books which I'll list in a future review.

4 out of 5 stars it's a wonderful album, love it and the DVD.   June 2, 2008

Love it. The Cuban music is wonderful, the beat the sexuality. it is a great sound track as is the movie.

4 out of 5 stars Not Cuban, but still enjoyable music   March 20, 2008
Karin Norgard (Anchorage, Alaska, USA)
This CD is necessarily full of contradictions due to what the movie portrays. Here is what the music is not: it is not an authentic representation of Cuban music (and the movie is most definitely not an authentic representation of Latin dance). However, I would disagree that the mix of English and Spanish prevents the music from being authentic or valid Latin music. A lot of reggaeton, salsa, bachata and most other forms of Latin music are incorporating English and Spanglish - including popular Latin music artists from Daddy Yankee to Aventura - and they are still definitely considered authentic Latin music (or at least valid interpretations). Now, some people are "purists" in that they prefer their Latin music to be in Spanish with minimal mixing of music genres. The validity of mixing musical genres - especially Latin and American - is a big debate and is really a matter of perspective and personal preference. However, for those that don't consider themselves purists or who are at least looking to overlook it once in a while, this CD has many enjoyable tracks and combines some reggaeton, hip-hop, cha-cha-cha, Latin pop, and ballads all onto one CD - definitely a soundtrack. My biggest complaint is not the music but the movie itself - that is most definitely not Latin or Cuban dance (or even ballroom dance). So buy the CD for some enjoyable music, but be intelligent enough not to look for authentic Cuban music in a "Dirty Dancing" soundtrack.
