3 out of 5 stars Guetta's Pop Life not as good as the Guetta Blaster   December 14, 2007
MO (MD)
Guetta's second album Pop Life falls short of the first album. This pop house/electronic album is more on the lines of Ministry of Sound/Dance. I take it Guetta is trying to blast out in the pop life culture of commercial DJ fame with lead vocal singer Chris Willis. However, his lead single "LOve is gone" is no where close to the vocals or charisma of JD Davis who did "The World is Mine", "In Love with Yourself" on Guetta Blaster giving true electronic fans and house fans a taste of what Dave Gahan and House music put together could be like. I admit Guetta is still a top 5 DJ globally speaking with putting out a roster of talent lead vocals. There is no doubt that French House music is on top of its game, however Guetta needs to go back to the sound of his first album.

4 out of 5 stars More electro power dance tracks from Guetta--gets a bit frenetic   August 21, 2007

Guetta doesn't hold back with the hard electro house beats on this latest album. It's definitely a dance stomper, but I actually miss some of the more `new wave' synthpop sounding tracks that were on Blaster, like songs in the Depeche Mode styles of "The World is Mine" and "In Love with Myself." There are a couple of nods to retro 80s stuff: an updated electro feeling cover of Public Image Limited's "This is not a Love Song" with an imitation Lydon vocalist, and the pumpin' male vocal track "Always", which samples the catchy background of the Tears for Fears classic new wave track "Change".

The disc is heavy on those tracks Guetta specializes in--tracks that sound like alternative rock tracks mixed into dance songs, with hard male vocals. Love is Gone comes in two mixes, the original mix, and the more raucous, bass heavy Rister & Garraud mix, both of which are dance slammers, making it hard to choose. "Every time we Touch" is thankfully NOT a cover of the Cascada song. "Tomorrow Can Wait" is nothing special, but "Winner of the Game" is a rockin' electro house stomper with heavy new wave male vocal. "Never Take Away My Freedom" is heavy noise and harsh male vocal, but the sample of "Don't You Want Me" by Felix wins you over. "Joan of Arc" is more of the same, and as a bonus, you get the recently remixed and re-popularized guetta classic "Love don't Let Me Go." While a handful of these gritty male vocal tracks are great, this latest Guetta offering has so many of them that it becomes a bit monotonous.

You feel so relieved when things are interrupted with a female vocal track, of which there are WAY too few. The female vocalists bring the more melodic sounding stunners, like, "Baby When the Lights Go Out", "Delirious", "Do Something Love", "You're Not Alone" has a generic female sample saying, "you're not alone", but this one almost borders on a retro-industrial sound.

Overall, Guetta keeps up the sound he's known for, but doesn't vary the intensity or give us enough female vocals, which leaves us with a series of songs that are consistently overly aggressive--bordering on manic. You may need to break this one up with some more mellow dance tracks to pace yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing comeback!!!   July 9, 2007

It's been three years since David Guetta's last original production (Guetta Blaster in the summer of 2004). I've got to say I own both of his original CDs, including the aforementioned one and "Just A Little More Love", and I was very much taken by surprise at how amazing the new CD is. The CD has taken on a different direction of more tek-house tunes than previously. But the quality of the music is superb. It is a dance album in all its power. The CD boasts some great collaborations with various vocalists and DJs/producers. This is definitely going to be one of my favourite CDs this year. I do recommend it to anyone who is familiar with David Guetta's work, as you would not be disappointed. Five stars all the way!!!

1 out of 5 stars Sooooo boring!   July 2, 2007

This is one the most boring albums ever! Uninteresting beats, weak melodies, tiring vocals... I'm really disappointed! David Guetta used to be one the hottest and best producers, and it's a shame he has no inspiration left.

14.Don't Be Afraid (bonus track)
15.Take Me Away (bonus track)
16.Love Don't Let Me Go (Walking Away) Radio Edit (vs The Egg) (bonus track)

French DJ David Guetta first caught my attention when I saw the brilliant parkour/breakdance filled video to his catchy guitar/dance hit (#3 in the UK) of 2006 "Love don't let me go (Walking away)".

On "Pop life", he returns with more of the same; high octane dance songs, most of which are sure to be club classics. The CD can be played non stop as a continuous dance party.

Opening is the eurodisco sound of "Baby when the light" which somewhat reminds me of eighties group 8th Wonder (with Patsy Kensit). In a similar vein is "This is not a love song".

Lead off single "Love is gone" appears in two versions; an acoustic version with a fuzzy bassline, similar to "Love don't let me go.." which is the radio edit remix, and a house version. Either way, they are both brilliant, and guaranteed to move you on the dancefloor.

Other standouts are the techno "Everytime we touch", the trance feel of "Delirious", "Tomorrow can wait", the guitar laced "Winner of the game" (with a rock edge), and the trance assertion of independence, "Never take away my freedom" (which samples from the Felix hit "Don't you want me").

There are 3 bonus tracks; the trance feel of "Don't be afraid", the eurodisco "Take me away", and the hit that started it all for me, "Love don't let me go (Walking away)".
