Freddie's best July 21, 2006 KT (East coast - USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
There's no way to exagerate how spectacular this recording is. It feels like Freddie and band drop a bomb at this live set. Legend of Henderson no-show is a great story that only adds to the listening pleasure. The band is great (including a young Billy Childs and already giants Lou Haynes & Herb Lewis) and is Freddie is on fire. With especially trumpeters, it will forever be impossible to narrow down to the "best trumpeter" other than to the obvious group of Diz, Morgan, Armstrong, Navarro, Hubbard and one or two others. After hearing this, it would be hard to argue against anyone putting Hubbard at the top of the list. As any long time jazz fan knows, it's hard to run across a recording that truly stands out (amongst all the competent Blue Note, Prestige and other recordings). This one does. It's simply incredible. Makes one wonder against why, in a profession, where the artists involved tour constantly, why more live sets (especially of the legends) weren't put on record. Incidently, the audio problems that people mention, to me, are overblown. The sound quality is just fine. Go out and get this one.

Flash and noise November 16, 2004 P. M. Leaning (New Zealand) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have been a Freddie Hubbard fan for years. I own 19 of his albums, plus about the same number on which he appears as a sideman. This album is a major disappointment. Hubbard's usually beautiful tone is flat and ugly, and it's nothing to do with the muffled quality of the recording. The tone is just harsh and ugly. I listened to Red Clay the day after I popped this one out of my car cd and there's no comparison. You keep praying for the missing saxophone player to finally show up so Freddie can have a break. The songs appear shapeless, the playing all about flash and noise. I hated it!
Terrific Hubbard, not to be missed in spite of lousy sound February 25, 2004 Odd Bjerke (1365 BLOMMENHOLM Norway) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have rarely been so frustratingly ambivalent about a CD. The disc contains some of the most astonishing trumpet playing I have ever heard, with Freddie in peak form. (I have fond memories of Freddie sitting in with the very underrated Woody Shaw at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival around this time, so this must have been a good period for him). On the other hand, the sound is very lousy. I notice that the CD has now been deleted. If a "sound doctor" could upgrade the sound (incredible what can be done) before a re-release, this would be a stone classic! The 5 stars are for Freddie, the sound I would rate 1 star.
Beware of bad sound November 20, 2000 M. C Whitmore (Jefferson, Md USA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
The music is fine the recording quality is low fi. You can hardly hear the bass or highs. It sounds like drummer Hayes left his cymbells at home and the piano is almost unaudible as is the bass. Its too bad as Hubbard is smoking. This cd sounds like it was made by a low quality recorder by an audience member.
